What this calculator does

In modern UK and international radiation protection practice, effective dose rate is typically expressed using the sievert (Sv) and its sub-multiples (mSv, µSv) per hour, minute, or second. However, legacy units such as the rem (and related sub-multiples) remain in use within older documentation and some non-UK sources.

This calculator provides straightforward conversion between effective dose rate units by applying accepted, fixed relationships for both:

  • dose units (sievert-based and rem-based), and

  • time units (per second, per minute, per hour).

Conversions are based on the standard relationships:

  • 1 Sv = 100 rem

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute

  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
