Radioactive decay calculator (time to reach target activity)
This calculator determines the time required for a single radionuclide to decay from a known initial activity to a specified target activity.
It supports planning and decision-making where it is important to know when radioactive material will decay to a defined level, such as a clearance threshold, disposal criterion, or operational limit.
What this calculator does
Given:
an initial activity for a single radionuclide; and
a target activity level,
the calculator determines:
the time required for radioactive decay to reduce the activity to the specified target level;
the fraction of the original activity that would be remaining at that point; and
the number of half-lives that need to have elapsed.
This is the inverse of a conventional decay calculation and is particularly useful for decay-in-storage and compliance planning.

All calculations are performed internally using SI units before conversion for display.
Defining the calculation
Users enter:
the radionuclide of interest;
the initial activity at the reference point; and
the target activity to be reached.
The calculator applies the radioactive decay law to determine the time required for the activity to fall from the initial value to the target value.
Important limitations
This calculator applies to single radionuclides only and assumes simple exponential radioactive decay.
It does not account for:
radioactive decay chains;
daughter ingrowth;
secular or transient equilibrium;
chemical or biological behaviour.
Where these effects are significant, or where regulatory decisions depend on detailed decay modelling, advice should be sought from a suitably qualified professional (such as an RPA or RWA), and validated decay modelling software should be used.

Radionuclide half-life data are taken from ICRP Publication 107.
